Journalism

Workshop 1: Journalism and Justice: The Voices of Youth (1.5-2 hours one day a week for 5 weeks or 1.5-2 hours each day for a week)

This curriculum provides a foundational introduction to journalism. Each day delves into a different type, form, and aspect of journalism as well as a specific lens that focuses on a topic related to social justice and society. These lenses include topics such as gender equality, air pollution, education, and accessibility. The overarching theme of the program is journalism and social justice, specifically why journalism is important and how it can be used to create social change. This involves a final project that students will work on throughout the program in which students create an article on a topic related to their community as a group. The program involves writing, discussion, fun activities, and informational lectures. The goal of the program is to inspire students, foster change, and facilitate meaningful discussion and learning. 

Workshop 2: Journalism and Justice: Broadcast Style (40 mins)

The journalism workshop provides a foundational introduction for students interested in learning about journalism in regards to society and social justice. The program provides information regarding different forms of journalism, how journalism impacts society, the history and structure of broadcast journalism, and how to look through sources to find relevant information.

Culture

Workshop 1: Cultural Exploration: Equatorial New Guinea (40 mins)

Join us for an engaging workshop on culture: what it is, why it matters, and how it shapes our world. Through interactive discussions and activities, we'll explore traditions, languages, and the impact of history on cultural identity. We'll spotlight Equatorial Guinea as a unique cultural melting pot and examine how understanding culture is essential in international relations.

Workshop 2: Cultural Exchange: Exploring Asia (Age requirement: 10 year old to Middle School Kids and Above) 

Time Commitment:  (1.5-2 hours one day a week for 5 weeks or 1.5-2 hours each day for a week)  

This curriculum introduces children to the culture of Middle East/West Asia. They learn in depth about Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine. Specifically, the history, food, geography, music, literature, and dance of each culture. Participants participate in all sorts of activities, such as creating art pieces and writing advocacy letters. By the end of the program, participants will create a final project that showcases what they learned about culture in one of the countries discussed through a poster, presentation, or creative art piece. 

Creative Writing

Workshop: Creative Writing: Fight for What You Believe In (40 mins)

 Students will learn about the importance of prose and poetry in advocacy. They will create a piece that centers on a time in which they fought for what they believe in. 

Workshop: Creative Writing:  Become a Human Rights Advocate (For Middle School and Above Specifically) 

Time Commitment: 1.5-2 hours one day a week for 5 weeks or 1.5-2 hours each day for a week

This program would encourage students to utilize creative writing and poetry as a tool to advocate for social justice. Over the course of five days, we would lead interactive lessons on writing techniques, showcase a diverse set of authors who have used writing as a form of advocacy, and provide a safe space for students to create their own writing projects in which they can showcase their own identity. 

Speech and Debate

Workshop 1: Debate: Exploring Weight and Scope (40 mins)

Through discussions, hands-on activities, and research, students explore and develop their presentational skills. This is a 45 minute workshop on March 15th designed for students, created by the local youth-led organization Learn4Justice. This program delves into the various impacts of the worlds as well as how to debate regarding them. The program fosters critical thinking about debate and the impact of laws on different communities. Students will work toward mini debates towards the end of the workshop.

Workshop 2: Speech and Debate Through Climate Change (1.5-2 hours one day a week for 5 weeks or 1.5-2 hours each day for a week)  

This workshop-style series would walk students through the basics of climate change from a social justice lens, develop argumentative/debate skills, give students greater confidence and knowledge about public speaking, and culminate in a speech presentation by the kids. We would supply any necessary reading materials in the class through printed means and much of the program will be based on engaging skill-developing games, videos articles, delivery practice, and guided discussions amongst students. 

Workshop 3: Debate: Immigration Laws and Displacement (Age Requirement: Middle School and above)

Time Commitment: (1.5-2 hours one day a week for 5 weeks or 1.5-2 hours each day for a week)  

Through discussions, hands-on activities, and research, students explore and develop their presentational skills. This is a 5-day program from June 23-27  designed for students aged 10-14, created by the local youth-led organization Learn4Justice. This program delves into the various laws that impact immigration, as well as how to debate regarding the topic. Structured as 2-hour sessions, the program fosters critical thinking about debate and the impact of laws on different communities while also paced specifically for 10-14 year old students. Students will work in groups towards presenting a final debate which will be presented during the final day of camp; parents and caregivers are invited to this presentation.
